Secrets of Rook Endings

If you really want to know
You can trust NUNNNunn gives credibility to this type of study. The reader knows he is getting the real deal. Although this book is a bit dry, I opine that anyone who works through this whole book will know rook and pawn endings like "riding a bike." I think this one is worth it. Do not expect to be entertained, though: this book is all about hard work.
Another great book by John NunnHalf of all endings in chess consists of rooks and pawns. This book will improve your overall chess results. Just like a lot of endgame books, this book is an absolute essential due to the fact that the endgame determines whether you can win, lose or save a draw.

Midwifery and Childbirth in America
Published in Hardcover by Temple Univ Press (September, 1997)
Average review score:

The Best Book on MidwiferyJudith Pence Rooks has written the best book available in the subject of Midwifery. It is a complete history, and is extremely well-written. It includes a comprehensive bibliography. For those of us who have had multiple home-births it is an invaluable resource. This will doubtless be the standard reference for years to come. We hope it will encourage the home-birth movement, and the use of mid-wives, as a safer alternative to physicians, in the United States.
Comprehensive, balanced, readable, an outstanding book!!Every profession should be so lucky to have someone write a book like this! Rooks has comprehensively and sytematically reviewed the scientific literature pertaining to the care of pregnant and birthing women and the issues of from whom, where, and under what conditions they receive care from health professionals. She writes in a readable, straightforward manner that makes her book useful and accessible to consumers and health care providers. The author is a Centers for Disease Control-educated epidemiologist and a certified nurse-midwife who has evaluated maternal and women's health programs abroad and conducted several major research projects in the United States.
The presentation of the facts in this book blew me away!Rooks is a great researcher and puts the facts down in readable language without blame on doctors nurses midwives or parents. Most objective book on this highly controversial subject matter.

Bred Any Good Rooks Lately?: A Collection of Puns, Shaggy Dogs, Spoonerisms, Foghoots and Malappropriate Stories (Intrepid Linguistic Library)
Published in Paperback by Bantam Books (March, 1994)
Average review score:

A very bunny fookMany people don't know the spoonerism was eponymously named after the famous professor Spooner, who was especially prone to these when he got excited. One time when he went to church, back in the days when they still had assigned pews, he found a woman occupying his seat, and said to her: "Mardon me padam, you are occupuing the wrong pie, may I sew you to another sheat?"
Overall, a very good book on this and other funny verbal conlabfulations. Oops, I mean confabulations.
A Bantastic FookI love spoonerisms and puns and this book has a ton of them. My favourite example in the book is the one where Anne Widdecombe made her speech to the Tory faithful on the evils of European monetary integration. She meant to say "I don't want a European to snatch my pound" but she ended up saying pound my snatch, which made for an image I tried in vain to supress in my imagination. All in all an excellent light read.

Hair Raising: Beauty, Culture, and African American Women
Published in Hardcover by Rutgers University Press (July, 1996)
Average review score:

Hair PoliticsExcellent resource for delving into the Politics of black hair in America. From jobs, to advertising, to day to day living hair affects African Americans in ways culturally and historically that many groups never confront. Great resource for women of all races to learn the political truth behind black hair.
You'll refer to it over and over againI used this book in several college papers I wrote as an undergraduate student, a paper I published on the politics of hair among children of African decent, and I still read it today. Rooks talks about hair and African women in advertising, popular and political culture and she really explains the historical contexts of these hair issues. A great read for any student, and non-student who is interested in diging a little deeper in the hair issues sorrounding African women.

Practical Rook Endings
Published in Paperback by Chess Enterprises (January, 2002)
Average review score:

Variations or Ideas? This book will not waste time on hundreds upon hundreds of tedious Rook and Pawn positions and variations. It will, however, give you the ideas on how to play these types of endings. Ideas are easier to memorize than variations - with the right idea, the correct variation will not be so hard to find. It even teaches how to play the "inferior" side of a rook ending. This book helped me improve not only my endgame play but also enhanced my game overall. Best buy for the buck. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
The most common of endings clearly explained!!This book helped me to understand rook & pawn endgames like no other before it. I had previously read Pandolfini's Endgame Course, Capablanca's Chess Fundamentals, Tarrasch's Game of Chess, and Reassess Your Chess (which has a few pages on the subject). These are all good books. But I never fully comprehended rook endings until I read this book. I finally understand the Lucena & Philidor positions and Why They Are So Important. And much more... This book is cheap, short (only 70 pages), and chock full of extremely useful information. I am a strong B player and just beat my first expert due to this book!

H. C. Westermann: Exhibition Catalogue and Catalogue Raisonne of Objects
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (June, 2001)
Average review score:

Westermann, Artist or Craftsman?H.C. Westermann makes art objects. Mostly he makes them out of wood, sometimes other materials. He makes his art objects small and large, all sizes. His objects are not sculptures although it is mostly an academic argument. Somer objects are quite large and elaborate and can pass for a sculpture. The question that always arises with an art object is: Is it art or is it both? H.C. is both an artist and craftsman. Once you had a chance to stand eye to eye with his work you will know at once that he is an artist. The book under review is a superb work of art itself. It does a very good job presenting the artist and his work. The book is arranged in a chronological order and shows a representative sample of H.C.'s work.
There are actually two books in one. The second part is a catalog raisonne of his work.
It is highly recommended for art lovers in general and those who like the not so ordinary.

H.C. Westermann
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (June, 2001)
Average review score:

one of a kindThis book is invaluable for Westermann fans. This is the first publication to come along that is comprehensive and includes little known works. There are only a few publications on this artist and they are nowhere near as complete as this one. The photos of the works are large, crisp, and show the details in the work. The history on the artist and his life is informative as well. I highly recommend this for those who know Westermanns work and for those unaquainted with it...this book will win you over.
It's not as bad to read as a previous reviewer claimed. Of course, if you want to study rook endings more generally or less deeply, then this isn't the book for you. "Surviving Rook Endings" probably is--and it is a really good introduction. If you have any doubt, then you almost certainly want "Surviving" rather than this one.
